How did you first hear about Port of Sunderland and when did you start working with the team?

We were looking for a new port terminal in the North East. I called the Leader of the Council [Cllr Graeme Miller] personally and he arranged a meeting with the team the very next day. It was a great start.

What challenges did your business face prior to working with the port and how did the teamwork with you to address them?

We were looking to expand in the North. The port’s team were able to give us a larger number of quayside and term-length options than any other competitive port and we were able to negotiate a bespoke package with an upgrade path that suited us perfectly.

How has the relationship grown since?

We have commenced with Phase 2 within one year of completing Phase 1. It really couldn’t be any better.

What do you attribute this to?

The availability of deep water, the warm reception and substantial pull from our customers and structural changes in the fertiliser market precipitated by the energy market and Ukrainian war.

Which services/spaces do you use at the port and what impact have they had on your business?

The Youngs Berth are ideal for tanks. We also use other stevedoring, handling and associated services too.

What makes Port of Sunderland a good partner for your business?

The team have a really positive can-do commercial attitude and an appetite to devise a bespoke solution that encourages long-term investment and relationship building. For a business looking to grow its operations in the North, they are great to work with.

Finally, what would you say to someone thinking of using the space/services offered by Port of Sunderland?

Forget preconceived ideas of how ports normally operate. There is a joined-up approach in Sunderland between the port, the council and a great ecosystem of local contractors and suppliers that make it easy to deliver a complex project without headaches.
